Hello
My name is Amanda Sofía Arroyo Grillasca (b. 2000), a Puerto Rican visual artist, muralist, and poet. After years of being recognized for my technical realism, I dedicate myself to dark surreal imagery and storytelling, using my art as a form of self decomposing. I view my work as a dialogue between the personal and the political, shaped by the relationship between my subconscious, my experiences and the much larger forces that define our world.
Visually gory and absent of color, my first and ongoing series “Sé Perfecta” explores ego, identity and power through the distorted perception of a young woman coming of age and her limited understanding of the world. Feminism, classism, history and psychological distress are always present at the core of my pieces, revolving around one main conflict: addiction. My art exists somewhere between confrontation and reflection, where the weight of the past meets the urgency to grow and transform in the present.
Each piece is a question and an unraveling. I don’t make art as a form to find answers, but instead challenge what I assumed at one point to be true. In a world saturated with noise, I choose to let the shadows tell the stories we often overlook, misunderstand or are too afraid to touch.
